Project Description

In May 2013, Southern Habitat was engaged by Wollondilly Shire Council to complete the works associated with establishing an Aboriginal Bush Tucker Garden within the Picton Botanic Garden. This project greatly improved the condition of adjoining bushland and now provides a safe meeting place for community events and a pleasant recreational pathway for the public to enjoy the Riparian River Flat Forest along this section of the creek.

Our Works

Our approach included:

  • Formalising the pathway track surface with crushed sandstone, extending 150m from the meeting circle to the intersection of the Botanic Gardens pathway;
  • Consolidation of weed species throughout the immediate corridor and entrance feature to achieve a managed state and reduce the potential threats of Moth Vine, Thistle, Paddy’s Lucerne and Turkey Rhubarb. A bushland area of approximately 880m2 was treated.
  • Spreading of mulch throughout interface areas and within the confines of the meeting circle to improve aesthetic and reduce edge pressures;
  • Stabilisation of overhang on the embankment, via the contour manipulation, clean soil import and surface stabilisation (Coir logs, Jute Matting and Mulch), leaving the finished surface ready for planting by community members if desired;
  • Removal of green waste, any redundant sediment fences and rectification of pathway construction activities.
